Answering Questions About Braces

Adult braces... No fun, right? Well, mine are off, so I can say, "Haha, suckers!"

Well, surprise, surprise, I answer a lot of emails with questions about braces. I don't mind at all; I think it is quite flattering that anyone would like my opinion on anything. One of these days, soon, I will write about my experiences with ROTC and leaving the Army Reserves, but that story is for another day.

Today, I will share a great question and/or comment sent to me about my braces, and also, share my response.

Subject: Question

Hey there. I'm a curious person so I just had to ask you this question. You see, I'm a banker in NYC who just got braces (UGH!) and was searching under the word braces and came upon your profile. The picture I saw, however, shows clear braces, yet colored ligatures! Why would you do the stealth of clear braces and then attract attention with the loud colors? Don't get me wrong, they look cute on you and - since you're done - you're teeth look amazing, but I was just curious! Thanks

P.S. Does the pain ever end from these things?

Haha, I love your question(s), by the way.

I did have clear, porcelains on top. They were nice, but I must admit, required more maintenance and caused more problems than my metal braces on the bottom. Also, they are *extremely* difficult to remove.

I did go with clear ligatures for about two years, but the last three months, I went with hot pink. Weird, but cute. I liked them, because they were fun.

Does the pain ever end? Not really. I used wax for the first few months because of all the metal rubbing the inside of my mouth raw. I had monthly adjustments as well with my orthodontist, and WOW, they can be painful. Eventually, the adjustments will be less drastic, and your teeth will require less shifting. Sometimes it feels like the braces will never come off, and you'll never be able to chew your favorite foods --for me it was caramel apples, popcorn, and chewing gum-- but you'll get there. Floss, brush, keep them clean, and of course, make your appointments with your orthodontist as scheduled.

Good luck! :)
