And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad

I think I first heard Gary Jules sing "Mad World"[1] back when all my friends were raving about Donnie Darko, but I never saw that movie. I think the story sounds interesting, but I can't forgive Jake Gyllenhaal for Bubble Boy just yet. (Nope, I haven't seen Day After Tomorrow or Brokeback Mountain either!) Yet, after I saw the trailer for Gears of War, I've been playing the song non-stop. And, it is not a happy song.

It's funny how a song can change your mood or make you think. "Mad World" was playing while my boyfriend and I walked into City Loft at Universal Studios Hollywood, and I couldn't think about anything joyous for at least half an hour. It's just... a sad song, but it begs you to listen to it.

Maybe I should start a support group. This song is just too sad to listen to over and over again.

[1] Yes, I know the song was originally written by Roland Orzabal of the British band, Tears for Fears. Honestly, I don't like that version as much.

I agree with you about Jules' version being better than Orzabal's. Jules leaves feeling that he is lost and abandoned when he sings that song. Orzabal doesn't understand his own work -- which is not that unusual with artists, BTW.

The story was that "Tears for Fears" was founded because the members were trying to raise money for therapy. Thinking about that factoid, I wonder if it wasn't just a publicist's fiction, or maybe a dismissive comment one of the band members made to an annoying journalist.
