My boyfriend doesn't know it yet, but we're going to watch The Lake House today. If you watch a decent amount of television, you've probably noticed the movie trailer. It is a romantic (drama?) film about two time-travel-crossed lovers starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. Remember Speed? Well, it's like that movie, but without the speeding bus, explosions, bomb defusing, camera rewiring, street luging or good cop turned bad --aka the reasons why my boyfriend liked that movie.
That's a joke; he hates that movie.
So, why would I take him to this movie? Other than the fact that he has a car and I need a ride to the theatre?
We are suckers for South Korean movies. The Lake House is actually based on the film, Si Wal Ae (or Siworae or il Mare). Both movies involve two individuals who fall in love through a "magic" mailbox. This mailbox is able to send letters to between these two people, who are actually two years apart. If you are confused, you are not alone. Most American critics seem bewildered at the "Hollywood metaphysics." Korean films (and tv drama series) easily disregard reality while throwing in gender stereotypes, glorified materialism, backstabbing, family grudges, problems with mistaken identity, terminal illness, star-crossed lovers, random coincidences, and of course, good girl vs. bad girl. What's not to love?
I like the Korean film because it's like a mix between A Wrinkle in Time and You've Got Mail. Throw in Shohreh Aghdashloo, and you know all my eccentric yet unexplainable ways to spend my time.
[Update:] Yes, Keanu's acting is strained at times, but sometimes you just need to watch a nice, romance movie. Too bad I figured out the plot twist ten minutes into the movie, but nonetheless, I enjoyed it, and look forward to seeing it again.

one of my favourite films of all time is Korean. Or I'm pretty sure it is. *googles* Nope, it's from Hong Kong, there goes that anecdote.
