Graduation Clothes and Accessories

Graduation is right around the corner for me. I am still debating about whether I will go or not. I have already spent the $45 for the cap and gown and invited my mother the other day. I just don't know if I can handle another long ceremony where I have to stand for a long period of time, then walk a long period of time, and then pretend to listen to some speaker I don't care about for another long period of time. Nonetheless, I'm going to milk this photo opportunity as much as I can.

Now, I wonder, what shall I wear? This weekend I am going to hit up the Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale, so I will hunt for some good bargains there. I need something cool and comfortable to wear underneath, preferably with pockets so I can carry my cell phone. Will also need some good accessories, including nice earrings and maybe some nice shoes.

I've also considered ordering a graduation lei, so I thought I would share some tips.

graduationlei.jpg First off, I am not Hawaiian. I'll admit that --for whatever reason-- I think I easily pass as a person from Hawaii, but that is not actually the case. So, why would I want to wear a lei for graduation?

Leis represent love, respect, and appreciation. They can be worn by anyone, smell great, and look gorgeous. It is acceptable for you to buy one for yourself, but they make great presents as well. If you purchase a lei, have it shipped as close to the graduation date as possible, and keep the lei in the refrigerator (in a plastic bag --maybe spritz it with some water) so it will stay in great shape.

Here's a few things to keep in mind when giving it as a gift:
1. When giving a lei as a gift, it is customary to give the lei recipient a kiss on the cheek when adorning them with their lei.

2. It is considered bad luck to wear a lei you have intend to give to someone else.

3. Do not give a pregnant woman a closed lei, because it is believed to bring bad luck and symbolize the umbilical cord around the baby's neck. Only give a pregnant woman an open ended lei.

4. The proper way to wear a closed lei is on the shoulders where it is draped half in front and half down the back. Open leis are worn with the middle of the lei hanging in the middle of the neck and the open ends down the front.

5. Bows are often added to closed leis and can be worn a few ways: They can be worn in the back like a clasp on a necklace. They can be worn to the side. If worn on the side it should be on the right if single or on the left if married or unavailable. For graduation ceremonies the bows can be change from one side to the other along with the tassel on the graduation cap.

There are a bunch of websites that sell and ship leis. The quality, prices, and shipping are all different, but check out some of these places:

Aloha Friends
Send Leis
Royal Hawaiian Leis

I love how you want something with pockets so you can carry your cellphone. lol Cause, like, having your cellphone on you while you graduate is very important!

(I kid, I'm even worse with my cellphone. lol)
