« Crazy Graduate Students | Main | Found Lost Notes »
I've been listening to Joshua Radin all day and am particularly sappy/melancholy for the moment.
Do not jump to conclusions; I am not ending this blog, nor am I going on hiatus. I just felt like taking a moment to jot down some honest thoughts.
So, let me be honest with you. This is just another weblog (among many, many blogs) with no particular focus on anything interesting. That is the truth.
A lot of bloggers seem to believe what they write is important or special. If it were, they would probably be getting paid for their words instead of spreading their gospel for free. I don't believe that I am particularly special in any way. The things I write here are not what I wish to represent me on any level, but unfortunately, they do... on many levels. Employers, new friends, old friends --it's not hard for them to find this site and my thoughts a little odd. Are they odd for thinking I am odd? I think so, but it doesn't matter to them what I think, does it?
To those who have asked, or want to ask but are too afraid to ask, I will answer your question. Do I really have nothing better to say than the dribble I put on my site? No. I have plenty to say, but you don't want to hear all of it, and I don't want to tell you most of it.
I would rather get anonymous comments and emails telling me things like, "I just visited your site for the first time in months and it sucks" than share my dreams, inner-thoughts and struggles with you, a very tough audience, and inevitably, hear the same comment.
I hope I haven't lost too many of you ... It just had to be said.

You've nailed it on the head, Stacy: that's what modern blogging is all about. It's about writing what's important to you in a way that's important to you. Our society has created this endless need for a cult of personality, and many bloggers want to be the next kottke (or whatever), but that's silly. Let kottke be kottke. You be you. I'll be me. Write for yourself and your readers. You have the right idea.

I hold back a lot on my own blog because I don't like boring people. I could post dozens of posts a day about things that I've found interesting, or am musing over, but noone would bother to read it and that fact is a little disheartening. So I don't.

I don't think it's just any blog. You have a great sense of humor, and that's not all that common. Most blogs are incredibly boring, actually, or are unintelligible because they are so focused on the gossip of whatever little clique the author is part of, so it's a cool blog. Maybe you could put together some kind of fictional humorous semi-autobiographical book and try to get it actually published and make a lot of money. It's as good writing as anything getting written today, so just try to put something more lengthy together and get it accepted by a real publisher and you can make some $.

its really hard to find a truly interesting, entertaining blog on the internet. most blogs suck, despite the fact that they share with the internet their most intimate thoughts.
keep on doing what youre doing, cause honestly, who cares if people like it. (ps i like it a lot)

hiya! don't think you got my reply to your comment but no, i didn't learn to cook through travelling. i learnt to cook through necessity! =)
my employer reads my blog too but we have come to an understanding that i will not be judged based on what i write in my blog. he's cool with it because he's got a blog too.

Yo,
Doesn't it all boil down to the purpose of your blog? i mean, are you writing it to keep your family uptodate, to vent, just cause you like writing etc... etc.. whatever..
Would you write the blog if no one else could read it?
Mind you, I'm not terribly familiar with your blog. I just found it today.
Anyways.
