My laptop was improperly shutdown last night, and when I launched Firefox v1.5 this morning, I found that all my bookmarks were gone.
I have heard that bookmarks are lost because Windows is shut down too soon --not that Firefox is unstable. Supposedly, it has something to do with when Firefox saves bookmark data during a session. I don't understand much beyond that, but here is what I did.
On Windows XP, I found my bookmarks saved:
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.#*$!\bookmarkbackups
Note: You may have to show hidden folders to see Application Data.
If this happens to you (i.e. you came here from a google search), please do not become disheartened and move on (or back) to Internet Explorer. I recommend instead that you go download the plugin, Bookmark Backup. And then, if you haven't already, install the common plugins and then some add-ons. I personally recommend Adblock.

If you are paying for your ISP and have full access to the server to upload files, you might consider SiteBar to keep and organize your favorites. It's free and what I use to access my favorites/bookmarks via any computer with internet access. There is even a nifty FireFox extension so that you can open SiteBar in your "sidebar" window.
You can few an example of this by viewing my SiteBar at: http://www.nead.us/neadlinks.
SiteBar allows you to have both Public and Private Bookmarks, and allows others to register and add their favs too. It is invaluable, and no matter what happens to my computer my bookmarks are untouched.
Blog on!

Same thing works for Thunderbird too, all your mail and what not is stored in the same area. Makes backing up nice and simple.

Adblock Plus! I installed it after some problems with Flash movies on Firefox. :)
And this is really helpful. I've lost my bookmarks several times and it depresses me a lot.
