I Am A Fish

I feel like I'm talking to a deaf man

As of the last year or two, things are not well between my father and I. I think my father and I used to have a fantastic relationship, but it was built mostly upon his selective hearing and my denial. His selective hearing is still around, but my denial that "everything is fine" is no longer.

We coorespond by email for the moment, because I'm not good at polite conversation by phone anymore. Maybe it's the spicy latina within me.

Regardless of what my father has done in the past to hurt me, I've always admired his grasp of the english language. He's able to word things exactly as they are, when I am constantly struggling to find the correct words.

His most recent email made me think.

"Fatigue makes cowards of us all" but don't push yourself too hard. If you have half of your Mom's determination and a little bit of my industriousness you'll never stop working. Take care of yourself, by now you know no one else will. Take care of number one.

I think he has successfully shown you exactly where I come from in just four sentences. Freaky.

Exacto Mundo, Stacia. Regrettably, you're on your own (but not totally since you do have friends & your mom too).

As an additional consolation, there's an ancient Chinese motto, "To die without regret". Many people in this world do just that - that's dying with regret. Just avoid that and follow your Dad's 1st two sentences and you'll do just fine.
