When I found out that Batman Begins was showing in IMAX, I wanted to see it in that capacity right away. After the march with ROP, we were near OMSI, so I ran in and asked if they were showing Batman Begins. They said, “Yeah, numerous people have asked us, but, uh, no, we’re not showing that here.”
What?! I left, shocked, and a bit peeved. As soon as possible I sent an email complaint to OMSI. Mark Brittell, the Visitor Services and OMNIMAX Theater Director, was quick to reply. This is what he told me.
Stacy - Thank you for visiting the OMSI website and for your question regarding the IMAX version of "Batman Begins". Currently OMSI is not able to show Batman Begins or similar first-run IMAX films at our OMNIMAX Theater because Regal Cinemas has blocked our ability to do so. At this time, Regal Cinemas has exclusive rights to the film in the Portland market. It is very disappointing for us and we are doing everything we can to bring this type of first-run IMAX film to OMSI.We encourage you to contact Regal Cinemas directly to voice your opinion regarding the matter. You can telephone Regal Cinemas Corporate at 865.922.1123 or write letters to Regal Cinemas Corporate, 7132 Regal Lane, Knoxville, Tennessee, 37918.
In the event we are able to show the film, we will post the information to our website, www.omsi.edu. You can also sign up for our email club newsletter at http://www.omsi.edu/info/eclub/ which offers the latest news on upcoming films, exhibits, events, and special sneak previews.Best regards,
Mark Brittell

I will definitley be calling the appropriate people. In the meanwhile, I guess I could watch Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkban... or not.

It's playing at Century16 on 82nd, which is NOT a Regal Cinema. Last I checked 82nd area was still a part of Portland. Maybe OMSI's too cheap to get the good movies and had to make something up?

Regal: Oh my, look at all these people calling up for OMSI. I know what... let's block the rights more, and if they want to see it bad enough they'll come to our theaters. Sure, we don't have the massive screens, but hey... it's money.
=)
